How to use our services effectively
- Relax - using an interpreter is not meant to be difficult or overwhelming.
- Speak naturally.
- Allow the interpreter to guide you in setting up the room to maximize communication comfort.
- Allow extra time in your communication as your message are interpreted, the response will be slightly delayed due to interpreting process.
- Maintain eye contact with the Deaf consumer - the interpreter is there to facilitate the communication between yourself and the client.
- Don't ask the interpreter any personal questions regarding to Deaf consumer, please ask the deaf client directly. The interpreter is strictly bound by a code of professional conduct and cannot repeat any information they have learned on previous interpreting jobs.
- American Sign Language (ASL) is an unique language with its own syntax and grammar.
- Bear in mind that interpreters will interpret everything they hear. Thinking out loud is discouraged.
- Provide periodical intermission as needed.
- If written documentations are included for the Deaf consumer(s), provide copies to the interpreter(s) in order to become familiar with the materials.
- Please allow one person to speak at a time so the interpreter will not be confused and lost.
- If the consumer is Deaf and Visually imparied, it is imperative to include the information on the intake so a tactile interpreter will be accomodated.
- Payment for the services is the solely responsibility of the provider who is needing to make their services accessible to the Deaf consumer. For more information, please refer to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Long assignments (1.5 hours or longer) such as workshops, training sessions, lectures, etc with continuous interpreting will require the use of a team of two interpreters. The teaming allows the interpreters to switch roles every 15-20 minutes which will reduce physical damages and mental fatigues that causes the interpreting quality to deteroriate.
Appointments that run over scheduled time:
- If your appointment runs over scheduled time, the interpreter will stay to complete their duty only if their schedule permits. Remember there is a high demand for interpreting services and often interpreters have a very tight schedule.
- Expedite the interpreter and deaf consumer through your system - reduce any waiting time in order to avoid going over the scheduled time and driving up your costs to your bill.
